This refined pair of neoclassical candlesticks was made in Genoa towards the end of the 18th century.
In richly sculpted, carved and gilded wood, they have a graceful line that slims them from bottom to top.
They consist of a base with curved and curvilinear profiles, a tripod with scroll feet and acanthus leaf decorations. The bases are decorated with carvings in the shape of Renaissance-style masks, with a shell on the top of the head. The bases are interspersed with the sculptures above by a carved ovolo frame. Above these rest three dolphins, whose tails, which turn into leafy elements, are connected by other masks which support flowered garlands from their mouths. Masks and tails support a trilobed element with a wavy profile that narrows upwards, decorated on the sides with carvings in the shape of a palm and a twisted half-column. Some leaves then give rise to the last portion, which is fluted and widens until it becomes circular, bordered by an ovolo frame, on which the candle was inserted, by means of an iron element.
The two candlesticks, which can possibly be transformed into lamps, electrifying them and adding lampshades, are very decorative and elegant. They are easily placed, even as sculptures, in multiple places, on chests of drawers and consoles, tables or stairs.
The candlesticks are sculpted and gilded on the front side, while the two rear sides are lacquered in the typical color of bole, as was characteristic at the time.
