Interior Scene with Cardinal – Natale Penati
Oil on canvas
Period: Late Nineteenth Century
Author: Natale Penati (signed lower right)
Dimensions: 68 x 49 cm
Description: Refined interior scene set in a sumptuous noble palace, enlivened by a meeting between a cardinal and a group of eighteenth-century aristocrats. The composition highlights the elegance of the garments. The decorative background is particularly successful, with walls adorned with gilded stucco, mirrors, sconces and a painting depicting a knight in battle, which gives depth and dynamism to the whole.
The work is signed by Natale Penati, a Lombard painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for his lively genre scenes set in the Rococo or Neoclassical era. His canvases, often animated by cardinals, ladies and nobles, are distinguished by the brilliance of the palette and the accuracy of the costumes. This painting is an excellent example, with vivid colors, beautiful lights and a refined attention to the rendering of fabrics and furnishings.
