View of Venice with the Church of Health – Eugenio Zeno Bonivento
Period: Late Nineteenth Century
Author: Eugenio Zeno Bonivento (signed “E. Zeno”)
Dimensions: 100 x 70 cm canvas only, 129 x 97 cm with frame
Technique: Oil on canvas
Description: A charming nineteenth-century view of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, captured on a bright holiday, enlivened by figures in traditional dress and sailboats. The work is signed in the lower right “E. Zeno”, a pseudonym used by Eugenio Bonivento (1865-1956), a Venetian painter known for his lively style and Guardi-esque brushstrokes. Bonivento was one of the leading exponents of the renewed Venetian Vedutism of the late nineteenth century, inspired by the great masters of the eighteenth century such as Canaletto and Guardi, but reinterpreted with contemporary sensitivity.
The painting stands out for its composition and accurate atmospheric rendering, enhanced by a luminous palette and a rapid but precise painting technique, which restores the eternal charm of the Serenissima.
