18th Century Piedmontese mirror in carved and Mecca gilt wood.
This magnificent mirror, dating back to the second half of the 18th century, is a valuable example of Piedmontese cabinetmaking of the time. Made of solid wood, it features a complex and refined hand-carved workmanship, which enhances its grace and elegance.
Technical Features:
Type: Fireplace/dresser mirror, typical of prestigious 18th-century furniture.
Origin: Piedmont, Italy.
Period: 18th century (circa 1750-1790).
Materials:
Structure: Coniferous wood, as commonly used in Piedmontese productions for its lightness and ease of carving.
Finish: Mecca gilding. This technique, very popular in the 18th century, involved the application of a metal leaf (usually silver or tin) subsequently painted with a transparent lacquer pigmented with resins and dyes to simulate gold. Mecca gilding, over time, tends to take on a warm and slightly dark patina, visible in some places, giving it an authentic and lived-in appearance.
Construction Techniques:
Carving: The frame and crest are entirely hand-carved with rococo motifs and incipient neoclassical elements. Leafy volutes, stylized rocaille elements and garland motifs stand out, typical of the transitional taste between Rococo and Neoclassicism.
Assembly: The structure is assembled with traditional techniques of the time, such as joints and nails, which guarantee its solidity despite its age.
Style: While maintaining a strong rococo influence in the voluptuous crest and lateral carvings, elements of transition towards Neoclassicism are already noticeable, visible in the greater composure of the rectangular mirror frame and in the overall symmetry.
Mirror: The original mirror has a slight oxidation and some characteristic \"stains\" that attest to the authenticity and age of the artifact.
Condition: Excellent general condition, commensurate with age. It shows signs of use and time (small missing parts in the gilding, dark patina of the mecca, which enhance its charm and historical authenticity. Any professional restorations carried out over time have been aimed at preserving its structural and aesthetic integrity.
