Leonardo Roda, "Nomads", oil on canvas, signed, Early 20th century
The oil painting on canvas by Leonardo Roda, signed in the lower right, depicts a lively scene of daily life outdoors, set in a rural landscape.
Dimensions: H 69 cm x W 89 cm
Description of the work:
The work portrays a group of people in a rural encampment, probably a nomadic community, next to two wooden living carriages, typical of caravans. The scene takes place in a clearing on the edge of a forest, under a large tree with autumnal foliage. Some characters, especially women and children, are engaged in daily activities: they converse, move around the wagons and horses. In the foreground, two horses – one white and one dark – advance slowly towards the viewer, while two others graze nearby.
The composition is balanced, with a skillful distribution of natural light filtering through the branches and reflecting on the grass, the bright clothes of the figures, and the water of a small stream in the foreground. The color is treated with warmth and softness, recalling a romantic and pastoral sensibility. The atmosphere is calm but lively, and conveys a sense of community and freedom.
