The author, endowed with great pictorial skill, is to be identified in the circle of Emilian artists gravitating around the creative genius of Guido Reni, who numbered among his pupils numerous excellent interpreters of his extraordinary inventions. The painting is in fact part of the many images of the Virgin Mary created by the great Master. The incredible grace of this Marian iconography lent itself well to private devotion and was often reproduced to embellish the homes of important Bolognese families who made great demand for it.
