Madonna with Child and Saint John the Baptist, a work by Giovanni Segala (Murano 1663 – Venice 1720).
Active in Venice and the Venetian hinterland, Segala was one of the most illustrious Venetian artists of his time; he was particularly sensitive to the style of Gregorio Lazzarini, inheriting his taste for delicate colors and atmospheres of diffused luminosity.
The painting expresses a climate of serenity and classical measure, according to the canons advocated by Arcadia for the return to balance in antithesis to the excesses of the Baroque; the painter demonstrates his technical virtuosity, as shown by the freedom of circulation of the brush with which he defines the ovoid folds of the drapery.
The painting can be dated to the years of transition between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
