Suggestive pair of wooden sculptures depicting angels in flight, sculpted in the round and covered with a refined gold leaf gilding. The figures, of strong expressiveness and movement, are depicted with one arm raised, probably to hold a missing element – most likely a crown or other symbolic attribute, as often happened in complex high reliefs or on altars dedicated to the Madonna.
The two works measure respectively:
Angel 1: height 103 cm (from hand to foot), width approximately 36 cm, depth 23 cm
Angel 2: height 98 cm, width approximately 34 cm, depth 21 cm
The sculptures show evident signs of aging and evidence of ancient interventions: missing parts (such as a replaced wing), visible integrations (restoration of some fingers), and subsequent applications of gilt paint, especially on hands and feet.
The color of the bole (light orange tending towards yellow) suggests a Venetian origin. The quality of the gilding and the elegance of the shapes confirm the high manufacture of the works, despite the conservative conditions. The angels can be restored or left in their current state, enhancing their historical patina according to the collector's taste.
