Elegant and finely decorated porcelain pitcher, made in Paris in the mid-19th century, during the transition period between the reign of Louis Philippe and the Second Empire. This refined piece perfectly represents the ornamental taste of the era: sumptuous yet harmonious, rich yet balanced.
The bulbous body, shaped neck, and sinuous handle highlight the stylistic influence of Viennese and German porcelain, but with the decorative lightness typical of Parisian manufactures. The surface is hand-decorated with a botanical bouquet of extraordinary variety and realism.
The floral scene, executed with great skill by painters specialized in naturalistic decoration, follows the tradition of the French "fleur peinte." Among the recognizable botanical species are: Gallic roses (old roses with pink hues), anemones and ranunculus in bright colors, bellflowers and morning glories in delicate tones, the oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) in bright orange, forget-me-nots (Myosotis) in azure, cornflowers and wild violets. The contour is carefully varied foliage with different shades of green.
The confident brushstrokes, the skillful use of shading and chromatic contrasts reveal the experience of the artist working here, presumably trained in the decorative schools linked to the independent Parisian manufactures that flourished after the Restoration.
The pitcher, marked on the bottom with an engraved mark, can be traced back to one of the famous independent manufacturers that operated in the Belleville or Bastille districts. These workshops supplied high-quality products intended for both the domestic bourgeois market and export. The gilding, applied cold and then finished hot, is still brilliant and a sign of high-quality treatment and technical competence.
