Venus surprised by a satyr
Oil on oak panel, 24 x 32 cm
Frame 42 x 53.5 cm
This charming 17th-century oak panel from the Flemish school depicts a lively and sensual mythological scene: Venus, goddess of love, is surprised in her bed by a satyr, while Cupid, winged and armed with a bow, seems to intervene with a playful and protective gesture.
The work is part of the Northern European iconographic tradition that combines a taste for mythological narrative with a marked formal sensuality and meticulous attention to the rendering of fabrics, flesh and drapery. The setting is intimate, enveloped in a sumptuous red drape that helps to emphasise the eroticism of the scene, while the satyr, half man and half goat, advances from the left with a lustful expression, attempting to uncover the goddess's nakedness.
The scene is inspired by themes from mythological tradition, where eroticism and allegory come together with refined elegance. Here, the theme of desire is mediated by a refined balance between sensuality and pictorial composition. In our case, the presence of Cupid acts as a moralising but also symbolic element, as if to sanction the inviolability or control of carnal love.
