Rare carved and gilded wooden frame, datable between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, probably from Liguria and Tuscany. The oval profile is framed by a rich ornamental apparatus with vegetal motifs and volutes, culminating in the upper part with a remarkable head of a winged angel sculpted in the round, protruding about 21 cm from the frame plane.
The work, probably made of lime wood, was presumably intended to accommodate the image of a sacred figure, perhaps a saint, and be placed above an altar. The structure has a refined three-dimensionality and an elegant balance between plastic and decorative elements, representing an important example of late Renaissance wooden art.
In recent times an antique mirror with a back has been inserted, making the object usable today even in contemporary or eclectic furnishing contexts.
Dimensions:
Height 117 cm
Maximum width 75 cm
Maximum depth (angel) 21 cm
Condition report:
The gilding is in a good state of general conservation, with some localized falls especially along the edges and in the most protruding parts. Signs of ancient woodworm attacks are visible, now completely inactive. The carvings are intact, without obvious missing parts. The structure has cracks and signs of aging that confirm the authenticity and age of the object.
