Blessed Amadeus IX of Savoy, oil on canvas, Early 1700s
This painting, oil on canvas from the early 1700s, depicts Blessed Amadeus IX of Savoy and is an excellent example of post-Baroque devotional painting, executed on the occasion of his beatification in 1677 (made official by Innocent XI, but celebrated and promoted more widely in the first decades of the 1700s).
The finger points to the cartouche, which bears the famous phrase:
"Exercise judgment and justice and succor the poor, and the Lord will give peace in your borders."
This is a direct reference to his reputation as a just and charitable prince, committed to peace and helping the needy.
Popular figures, probably representatives of the needy population, are visible in the background.
