The pair of paintings offered, works by a Neapolitan author active between the 17th and 18th centuries, depict two biblical episodes from the life of Abraham, particularly involving the patriarch's two sons, Ishmael and Isaac, and narrated in the Book of Genesis.
The first painting tells of the young Ishmael, Abraham's first son, born from his union with the Egyptian slave Hagar, a union consented to by his wife Sarah in order to have an heir, as she thought she could no longer have children given she was now elderly, with the aim of adopting him at the time of birth.
After the birth of her son Isaac, however, Sarah's acute jealousy of the young slave Hagar arises, and Abraham is then forced to send her away along with their son Ishmael.
In the illustrated episode we see Hagar, lost in the desert of Beersheba and desperate for the imminent death of her little son, here helped by the Archangel Michael who points out a spring to which she can bring the little one to quench his thirst.
The second painting instead tells of Isaac, Abraham's second son, generated by his wife Sarah, although at an advanced age.
God subjected Abraham to an extraordinary test of obedience, and to see the strength of his faith, he orders him to sacrifice him; this goes without hesitation to Mount Moriah and while he prepares to diligently carry out the sacrifice, already holding the knife, he is blocked by the angel sent by the Lord, who grabs his wrist with a strong and concrete grip, and shows him a ram to be sacrificed as a substitute.
