A pair of spectacular winged angels from the Baroque period.
Circle of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)
Rome, mid-17th century
Carved in the round wood, gilded and polychrome
Height: 88 cm, Width 50 cm, Depth 60 cm.
Splendid pair of fully carved polychrome and gilded wooden angels, a true masterpiece of the mid-seventeenth century intended for lovers of high-level sculptural works, coming from a prestigious private collection.
Regarding the origin, these sculptures, presumably originally placed on the sides of an altar in the presbytery area, find their place in the context of the most refined production of Roman Baroque.
The vigorous plasticity of the garments that sinuously wrap the figures, the intense expressiveness of the faces, rapt by a divine vision, and the incisiveness with which the feathered mantles of the large outstretched wings or the thick locks of hair are carved, recall the most illustrious prototypes of the statuary of one of the greatest protagonists of the Baroque season, Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), from whom our anonymous sculptor was able to draw compositional ideas and formal solutions.
It can therefore be assumed that the two wooden statues under examination were produced in a Roman workshop in the second half of the seventeenth century by an artist with Bernini training, distinguished by that luxurious style that dominated the European scene throughout the century, with strong similarities to the works of Ercole Antonio Raggi, known as il Lombardo (Vico Morcote, 1624 - Rome, 1686) or Ercole Ferrata (Pellio Intelvi 1610 - Rome 10 July 1686).
Our sculptures are therefore a celebration of the Italian seventeenth century in the purest Baroque style, of rare beauty, a testimony to the glory, faith and grandeur of the Eternal City.
The presence of most of their original polychromy and gilding, marked by a pleasant craquelure, is extraordinary. We can say that for their age and preservation they are collectible items, rare on the market and of great scenographic effect, which will enhance and amplify the beauty of the home that they will adorn.
Good state of preservation, original gilding and polychromy.
