LIP automatic watch with date and center seconds, 1970s.
The LIP manufacturing tradition began with Emmanuel Lipmann at the end of the 18th century.
Passionate about mechanics and mechanisms, on the occasion of Napoleon Bonaparte's visit in 1807, he created the pocket watch that the citizens wanted to offer to the emperor.
The same passion was inherited by his nephew Ernest who, in 1867, created a workshop for the manufacture of watches that would grow rapidly. But it was not until 1896 that the LIP" brand was coined."
In 1914, Lip is a established factory with 150 master watchmakers and also produces wrist chronometers for artillery officers of the French army and aeronautical watches used by the legendary "Aeropostale".
At the beginning of the Second World War, the company was converted to the production of ammunition and during the German occupation it was destroyed by Allied bombing. At the end of the war, in 1945, the management of the company was taken over by Fred Lip who, after rebuilding the factory and relaunching production, installed the first assembly line of mechanisms (1950) and dedicated himself to the creation of the electronic watch. In 1952 the "LIP Electronic" was presented to the press.
The first two models are intended for General de Gaulle and President Eisenhower.
After vicissitudes, the company is still active.
