A deeply moving image of the 'Entombment', with the Madonna at the centre of the composition, bending over her dead son in a gesture of utter grief, eyes lowered and wiping away tears with her immaculate white veil, looking remarkably beautiful.
Christ occupies the entire width of the painting and the details are masterfully rendered: the muscular strength of Christ, the meticulous rendering of the body's anatomy, the great delicacy of the facial features expressing gentleness and appeasement, the wound with the still fresh blood trickling down, indicating the recent death.
At the top left in the background, figures can be seen in the distance in a landscape with bluish tones, details that are quite characteristic of northern European painting of the early Renaissance.
Oil on panel (partially parquetted along a vertical crack, which has now been stabilised). Numerous losses, especially on the side of the composition, Joseph of Arimathea and Mary Magdalene, whose characteristic attribute, the jar of ointment, is depicted with remarkable finesse. Traces of age, cracked, in good condition, some old restorations. Framed.
Although the painting has suffered greatly from the ravages of time, the colour layer is stable, with no significant detachment. The fact that the painting is in its original state and has not been painted over adds to its beauty.
Approximate dimensions: 55.7 x 53.8 cm (with frame: 69,2 x 67,5 cm).
