Hendrick Goltzius (Bruggen 1558 - Haarlem 1617)
"Saint Peter"
Oil on canvas
Canvas 103 x 77 - frame 131 x 105
Excellent condition with no restorations or repainting
Large painting depicting an intense portrait of Saint Peter in prayer.
The face of the Saint, in profile and with his gaze turned towards the sky, is characterized by an extraordinary expressive force, and by an evident hieratic transport.
It is a particular interpretation of the most representative human figure of the Church, the first Pope appointed directly by Christ.
He is the character who has most stimulated the creativity of the great masters of all Europe.
This important work, erroneously attributed in the past to Josepe Ribera, is clearly referable to the production of the great Dutch Master Hendrick Goltzius as can be seen from his engraving dated 1589, which we publish.
In fact, he was, in addition to being a famous painter, an important Flemish engraver.
This is a very interesting and stylistically excellent but also exciting painting, executed with uncommon pictorial skills.
The very effective hatching of the Protagonist's virile hands is in fact a peculiar gift of the Master of Haarlem, such as to indicate with certainty the attribution of the work almost as if it were a signature.
The painting is in excellent condition with a relining from the last century and an important coeval lacquered and gilded box frame.
