Tempera on wood panel. The painting depicts a half-bust female figure; she wears a red dress over a light tunic, while a green cloth rests on her right shoulder. Her red hair is gathered with a central parting and is partly covered by a pristine head covering; her full face presents a pensive expression: a thoughtful gaze, arched eyebrows, and slightly furrowed lips. The work is one of the numerous derivations from a lost fresco by Andrea del Sarto, created in 1522 for a tabernacle placed near Porta Pinti in Florence and documented to exist until 1880, albeit in precarious condition. Among the documentary sources of this work, Vasari in particular recalls the fresco as a "Madonna with Child and Saint John" and, as a frequent visitor to Sarto's workshop, specifies that the face of the Madonna was modeled after the artist's wife, Lucrezia di Baccio della Fede. Of the numerous derivations, many faithfully reproduced the figures and varied the background. Here, only the face of the Madonna is reproduced, but it is faithful in its physiognomic features, expression, and attitude to other documented copies, just as the acidic palette, an expression of the sixteenth-century Mannerist taste promoted by Del Sarto, is preserved. The work is presented in an antique frame, modified to adapt the larger dimensions.
