This splendid 17th-century canvas depicts the famous episode of Jesus's encounter with the Samaritan woman, narrated in the Gospel of John (Jn 4:5-42).
While traveling from Judea to Galilee, Jesus meets a woman at Jacob's well in the region of Samaria. This gives rise to one of the most revolutionary dialogues in the New Testament, rich in symbolic and metaphorical meanings that illustrate Jesus's message, His offer of salvation and eternal life through faith in Him, and the importance of a personal relationship with God.
Christ engages in a significant discussion with the Samaritan woman regarding her physical and spiritual thirst. During this encounter, Jesus reveals to the woman His identity as the Messiah and His mission to bring eternal life to those who believe in Him.
It is a work of excellent pictorial quality, and the scene is particularly pleasing.
