"Madonna with Child and Angels" (Allegory of Charity) Oil on canvas Period: Second half of the 16th century Beautiful antique gilded frame of considerable thickness. Provenance: private Bolognese collection.   Splendid canvas from the late 16th century depicting the Madonna with Child surrounded by three graceful little angels. Very interesting painting with a subject so dear to the great Masters of ancient painting. The scene is very pleasant, in a context of infinite sweetness and serenity. The maternal gaze of the Virgin, the central figure of the painting, lowers towards the Son in a gesture full of love. The three little Angels smile joyfully, reassured by the protective figure of the Virgin. It is the allegorical image of "Charity" described with the Maternal Figure who gives her love not only to her own Son, but also to other small needy ones. The theme is described here in a particularly refined way, with a very balanced, perfectly symmetrical composition, where the protagonists completely fill the canvas, frontally illuminated and standing out greatly against the dark background. The work conveys positive sensations and the Christian message appears evident. The solemn static nature, far from the exuberant Baroque descriptions, and the joyful climate, contrary to the severity of the Nordic authors, belong to the canons of 16th-century Italian painting, with particular reference to the pictorial and chromatic characteristics of the Romagna school of the 16th century. The scene is particularly pleasant in a joyful context, with a positive message evidently suitable for domestic devotion and certainly commissioned for this function.
