Presentation of Jesus at the Temple
Venetian School of the 16th century
Oil on canvas
Carved and gilded frame
Canvas 100 x 77 cm, frame 117 x 96 cm
Excellent condition
This elegant, typically sixteenth-century composition depicts the episode from the Gospel of Saint Luke, in which the infant Jesus is presented in the Temple of Jerusalem. The scene is truly captivating: the Virgin Mary raises her Son with both hands and offers him to Simeon. Meanwhile, a stunned Joseph stares wide-eyed at the stern figure of the bearded old man. The Child recoils in fear, turning towards his Mother, who watches him tenderly and protectively. Not far from the group, a young woman participates in the solemn ritual, who tradition identifies as the midwife who assisted Mary during childbirth.
The work is of excellent craftsmanship and exhibits the unmistakable characteristics of Venetian painting of the 16th century.
The references to the famous compositions of Giovanni Bellini are evident, whose extraordinary pictorial language influenced almost all Venetian artists of the 16th century.
The palette used is characterized by exclusively warm colors in shades of yellow, ochre, and brown, with the sole exception of the Virgin's blue cloak.
The work has already been restored, cleaned, and perfectly relined, and is in excellent condition.
