Lamentation over Christ by the Virgin with Mary Magdalene
Circle of Pietro da Cortona
(Cortona 1596 – Rome 1669)
Oil on canvas
Gilded and molded contemporary frame
Canvas 76 x 102 frame 90 x 117
This beautiful 17th-century painting depicts the dramatic moment of Christ's lifeless body being taken down from the Cross and lying on the ground on a white sheet.
The Mother stands upright with her hands in prayer, and Magdalene kneels, kissing Jesus' hand, despairing in agonizing grief. In the dark sky, a light illuminates three cherubs.
Two little angels standing next to Christ display the symbols of the Passion, and their naked bodies with lively complexions contrast with the outstretched, elongated, and bloodless figure. The interplay of light and shadow is very pronounced, and the chiaroscuro effect creates the volume of the figures, with a remarkable three-dimensionality to the scene, in addition to increasing its drama.
The painting is placed within the Roman painting of the 17th century and presents evident similarities with the works of Pietro da Cortona, who influenced a good part of his contemporary artists working in the Capital.
A beautiful gilded and molded frame perfectly completes the work.
