🔶 Jean Michel Diebolt (1779-1825c.)
🔶 Marine in a Storm
🔶 Oil on canvas, 37.5 x 47 cm
🔶 Signed lower right: J.M. Diebolt, dated 1817
Splendid oil painting on canvas depicting a marine scene in a storm, by the French painter Jean Michel Diebolt (1779-1825c.), an artist known for his representations of marine and animal subjects. The work, dated 1817 and signed in the lower right, captures with great skill the fury of the elements and the human drama related to navigation.
Diebolt trained under the guidance of Joseph-Benoît Suvée and Jean-Louis Demarne, two masters who influenced his artistic sensibility and his ability to vividly render scenes of daily life and animated landscapes. In 1824, his works were exhibited at the prestigious Salon, attesting to his fame and pictorial quality.
The composition of the painting develops with a strong dynamism: the dark and stormy sky opens onto a burst of light, while the impetuous waves crash against the cliff. In the background, one can glimpse an imposing coastal tower, a silent witness to the ongoing tragedy. In the foreground, desperate figures attempt to rescue the shipwrecked, in a scene of intense drama and expressiveness.
The work is characterized by a skillful use of light and color, elements that give depth and movement to the scene. The contrast between the cold tones of the sea and the warmer tones of the mainland creates a highly evocative effect, typical of Diebolt's best works.
Conditions: The canvas has a uniform patina and traces of craquelure consistent with the age of the work.
