This pair of consoles was made in the second half of the eighteenth century in the Neoclassical period, in Naples.
The consoles, made of carved and lacquered wood, consist of two half-moon shaped tops lacquered in faux jasper. The apron beneath the top is sculpted in the manner of classic fluted friezes, lacquered with a light color and gold. The four legs are also fluted, lacquered, and gilded, and terminate in quadrangular feet.
These consoles are very elegant and refined due to the simplicity of their line and coloration. Consoles with two shelves are also quite rare. These allow for greater flexibility in their use: on the lower shelf it is possible to display, for example, vases with flowers, porcelain, books, or other decorative objects in addition to what is placed above, or offering the possibility of lightening the upper shelf from too many objects.
Due to their small size, especially the particular depth of the very narrow tops, and their markedly decorative character, these consoles can be easily integrated into any environment. They are therefore perfect in entrances or corridors, in a living room or study, displayed in pairs or individually. The light color also makes them pleasing both next to antique furnishings and in modern contexts.
