A pair of ancient paintings that reproduce the two famous self-portraits of the two greatest masters of the Golden Age of Flemish painting, Rubens and Van Dyck: the works, executed on oval-shaped panels and enriched by two beautiful gilded wooden frames, are of pleasant impact and of great decorative value.
It was very fashionable in the 18th and 19th centuries for art collectors to furnish their homes and palaces with copies drawn from older and more famous paintings; these are works that respond to a need for decoration, once as today perfect to be placed in a living room or in a study.
Finely painted, they are precisely replicas of the most famous self-portraits of the two painters
The first is the self-portrait of Pierre Paul Rubens painted between 1623 and 1625, kept at Windsor Castle, made for the Prince of Wales, the future Charles I, King of England, who wanted to have an effigy of the famous painter in his collection. The second is the self-portrait of Anthoon van Dyck of 1632, currently at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
In both works, the effigies are portraits with dark, sober but fashionable clothes and with precious fabrics, typically used by men of that era belonging to a middle-upper social class or by knights. They do not have attributes that allude to their profession, although they wear golden chains, alluding to the success and wealth that they had achieved in life.
Without a doubt, both images of the two Flemish masters were copied many times and had a considerable dissemination, also through the numerous engravings.
