Luigi Milani, born in 1957 in Frassinelle Polesine (Rovigo), created the artwork "Bicycle Thieves Giro d'Italia 2013" using tesserae made from used bicycle tires on a wooden board (185 x 126 cm). The artwork was exhibited during the 2013 Giro d'Italia in Brescia. The artist fixed the tiles cut-out from used bicycle tyres using special glues and some screws. The tyres carefully chosen for their exterior look and colours, are assembled in a particular 'order' giving rise to an homogeneous and pleasent composition. The artist created a pink box in the central part of the work, a reference to the color of the shirt of the leader of the race. The different positioning of the tiles optically divides the work into two halves vertically creating a chiaroscuro effect. The incorporation of small reflectors within the tyre parts composition light up when illuminated with artificial light. With his artworks Luigi Milani is on display in many private collections both in Italy and abroad.
