The artist became known above all for his use of torn advertising posters transformed into works of art. In fact, he immediately became famous for his décollages, a technique he experimented with for the first time in Rome when, walking around the city, he saw detached and torn posters and took them to his studio, transforming them. In 1953, Rotella realized that painting was no longer of great interest to him and he moved clearly towards the concept of advertising posters conceived as artistic expression. Rotella thus became part of Nouveau Réalisme.
