Two cherubs participate in the scene, positioned on either side of the Cross. It is a typically Flemish work of the 17th century that describes with remarkable elegance one of the themes most developed by Masters throughout Europe. Suggestions drawn from Italian painting are evident, particularly from the Emilian school of Guido Reni and the Carracci.
