Oil on panel - circa 1530
Panel dimensions: 55 x 75 cm
The work is painted on a single-panel poplar wood, as was customary in the most important workshops of the early 16th century.
Excellent state of preservation.
This magnificent work, a true gem of the early Lombard Renaissance, is clearly attributable to the catalog of Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli, known as Giampietrino.
In addition to the truly unique and unmistakable stylistic characteristics, the attribution is confirmed by comparisons with some of his similar paintings, particularly with the panel attributed to the Master, exhibited at the Diocesan Museum of Milan, which unequivocally presents all the same pictorial peculiarities. The version of the "Christ Carrying the Cross" in Milan differs in that the face of Christ is turned towards the viewer on the left side and due to the different position of the hands.
The same posture, however, is found in a panel recently auctioned by DOROTHEUM in Vienna, valued at 80,000 - 120,000 and sold for 75,000 euros plus auction fees (94,050 euros) (see photo on our website).
Among the known versions of this subject, this is certainly one of the most interesting made by the Milanese Master.
Working in close contact with Leonardo, Giampietrino assimilated the pictorial lesson and a strong charge of esotericism, which distinguishes the faces of his characters.
The work is in excellent condition with a very fine craquelure consistent with the period over the entire painted surface. (see high-definition detail on our website)
