Pierre-Philippe Thomire, Pair of neoclassical candelabras, France, 1st quarter of the 19th century.
Gilt bronze
h. cm. 52
The two candelabras consist of an amphora-shaped structure, decorated with friezes of acanthus and palmetto leaves of classical inspiration; on the front of the vases are two figures, respectively a female, dressed in the Greek style, and a male, semi-nude; a large bird of prey clings to his ankle: the eagle, symbol of Zeus, identifies the ephebe with Ganymede. The square base is also adorned with vegetal decorative motifs, signed at the bottom "Thomire à Paris" by the bronze maker Pierre-Philippe Thomire.
