Antique Russian Icon
Russia, Palekh school
Period: late 18th/early 19th century
Tempera on wood panel with gold background
Dimensions: 90 X 70 cm
Excellent condition
A magnificent, large-sized Russian icon of exceptional beauty with an infinite series of Marian depictions and Saints from the Orthodox liturgical calendar.
The creation of the hundreds of figures that fill the entire gilded surface of the panel certainly required a great commitment from the artist who created this important work.
Starting from the center of the Icon, one can observe 12 scenes from the life of Christ and the Gospels around the scene of his Resurrection.
More laterally, the menologia of the 12 months of the year are arranged with the complete depiction of the multitude of Saints commemorated every day of the year, including all the fixed holidays of the calendar.
Finally, on the four sides of the panel, arranged in a double row, an infinite series of images of the Virgin and Child and other icons of the Russian tradition.
It is a work of exceptional beauty but also of great artistic and religious interest.
The state of preservation is excellent.
The panel is extraordinarily large and is divided into three vertical sections. For this reason, it was necessary to fix them by inserting metal bands in the back to hold them together securely and prevent their detachment due to the typical convex curvature of the panel.
A certificate of authenticity and a descriptive sheet will be issued.
