Antonio Tibaldi (Rome, c. 1635 - post 1675) Workshop of
Still life with armor, drapery, and sculptural works
Oil on canvas (53 x 77 cm - framed 65 x 89 cm)
DETAILS (link here)
A painting of striking stage presence, depicting a still life composed of an opulent display of objects, including various precious draperies embroidered and edged with trimmings and gold fringes, parts of a dark parade armor with gold borders, sculptures, an altar adorned with winged sphinxes, and precious chiseled metal vases.
These images, in addition to their decorative aesthetics, are laden with allegorical meanings, to the point of interpreting such compositions as refined Vanitas: in fact, they are a sort of allegory that likely invited the viewer to meditate on the futility of vain glory (here symbolized by weapons or the altar) or earthly riches (precious objects and fabrics).
The pictorial characteristics declare its execution by a capable 17th-century author of the Italian school, whose traits evoke the teachings of the best Flemish masters of previous generations. The evident post-Caravaggesque Roman cadences are also highlighted in the contrasts of light and in the dense pictorial material: all reasons that allow us to assign the painting to the circle of Antonio Tibaldi (Rome, c. 1635 - post 1675), a talented epigone painter of Francesco Fieravino known as the Maltese and therefore appreciated painter of still lifes similar to those of his master.
Active mainly in Rome, the painter was extremely prolific and benefited from extraordinary success among collectors of the time. His presence and the notoriety achieved are evidenced by the multiple compositions that have been returned to him in recent times, kept in the most important public and private Roman collections of the time, such as those of the Albani, the Barberini, the Chigi, and the Colonna.
