Interesting sculptural piece for collectors, it is a circular terracotta element made with the bas-relief technique and probably used as or as a decorative element of a study or may have been executed as a model for the execution of a bronze variant, which was widespread between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, by the workshop of the Augsburg medalist Hans Jacob Bayr. The iconography is taken from an important engraving by Hans Von Achen that deals with the theme of the introduction of the personification of painting among the arts and sciences, but in this case the figures with classical attire are placed in the city of Rome, which is recognizable by a certain topographical quality of the representation. This innovation was introduced by Bayr himself, probably as a result of his trip to Rome, and that he will apply it to his models, spreading this iconography through medals and bronze tondi. One of these is kept at the National Gallery in London (https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.76318.html).
The fact that the object is in terracotta rather than bronze, as it is usually found, makes it a rare and fascinating piece. Furthermore, the piece differs from all others known for the frame that follows classicizing decorative element with acanthus leaves. The object has received restoration over time. The terracotta, in its state and wear of the patinas, is in accordance with being a piece from the early seventeenth century.
