Rudolf Neugebauer (Münster 1892-Hamburg 1961)
A post-impressionist painter of figures and landscapes, he trained at the School of Fine Arts in Elberfeld. In 1910, at just 18 years old, he exhibited his paintings for the first time.
From 1911 to 1913, he continued his training at the “Royal Bavarian Academy of the Fine Arts” in Munich under the direction of Hugo von Habermann (1849-1929), one of the founding members of the Munich Secession.
In 1913 and 1914, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, immersing himself in the lively artistic milieu of the French capital.
A portraitist par excellence, he executed numerous portraits for royals, politicians, and academics, paintings now exhibited in museums and public institutions in Germany.
Around the 1920s, the artist embarked on numerous trips to Europe, painting primarily landscapes and experimenting with different painting techniques: watercolor, etching, pastel, drawing, etc.
His favorite places were Hamburg, the Elbe River, Alpine landscapes, and Mediterranean scenes (Venice, Florence, Capri,...)
From 1930, Neugebauer also created small sculptures.
The artist participated in numerous exhibitions: Münster, Hamburg, Nuremberg,...
Description:
The painting described here, dating back to 1912, depicts the back portrait of a young nude woman with her private parts barely hinted at, and with an attitude that suggests a state of mind investigated with great sensitivity.
The artist does not make the woman recognizable, but her pose with her head bowed gives the image a psychological connotation that intrigues the viewer.
Neugebauer also shows a strong interest in vibrant chromatic contrasts rendered through a material palette with a strong visual impact.
