The Susse Frères Foundry is a historic French foundry known primarily for the production of bronze sculptures and decorations. Founded in 1839 by Auguste Susse, the company distinguished itself by the high quality and refined design of its works, often characterized by elaborate details and great skill in bronze casting. During the Belle Époque, Susse Frères collaborated with several renowned artists, contributing to the creation of some of the most iconic sculptures of the era and reaching the peak of its notoriety.
This pair of vases made of yellow veined marble, mounts Ormolu decorations in gilded bronze signed by its designer and marked by the Foundry with the numbering number 38. The bronzes, among which the four satyr masks stand out, envelop and decorate the barrels with elegant vegetable volutes and acanthus leaves. An identical pair of vases, bearing the same signatures Becker and Susse Frères, but in pink veined marble, were sold at Christie's London (19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art and Ceramics including a Property from the Palazzo of a Milanese Noble Family, March 19, 2009, lot 87, for £22,500).
