This interesting painting portrays St. John the Baptist as a child, with his gaze directed towards the viewer.
The painting presents the peculiarities of French portraiture from the late 16th century, with the face of the protagonist taking on the appearance of a court lady.
The result is a young St. John with a "vain" appearance, with a very improbable hairstyle for the hieratic canons of the character.
It is precisely this intriguing particularity that makes the work fascinating and very pleasant, probably made on commission for the room of a noble infant.
It is in fact the portrait of a noble girl in the guise of St. John the Baptist sitting next to her lamb with a "Greek-style" tunic and shoes on her feet.
The work is unusual, of great character, and lends itself to furnishing any environment with excellent wall impact, arousing empathy and curiosity.
The painting was relined in the nineteenth century and is in an excellent state of preservation with still vivid colors and a very healthy pictorial layer.
It is complete with a beautiful antique lacquered box frame with gilded profiles.
We issue a stamped and signed certificate of authenticity that guarantees the period, origin, and all the characteristics of the work, drawn up by an Antique Dealer affiliated with FIMA (ITALIAN FEDERATION OF ART MERCHANTS).
