Portrait of Henry IV, King of France and Navarre. Oil on canvas. French School. Late 16th century. Gilt frame. Canvas 55 x 71 cm, frame 67 x 83 cm. Excellent condition. Work on its original canvas. Vigorous and highly characteristic portrait of one of the most charismatic and beloved Kings of France, a figure of great importance who inspired painters, theatre artists, historians, and writers in the description of his intense biography. The painting excellently depicts his strong personality and is the work of a skilled French author who portrays him still at a young age and in the prime of his virility, even before ascending to the throne in the 1580s. Henry IV of Bourbon, known as Henry the Great (Pau, 13 December 1553 – Paris, 14 May 1610), was King of France, the first of the House of Bourbon. Son of Antoine de Bourbon and Queen Joan III of Navarre, he inherited the crown of Navarre from his mother in 1572. In 1589, he succeeded Henry III of France, being the designated heir after the death of the Duke of Anjou, becoming the first monarch of the Bourbon branch of the Capetian dynasty to ascend to the throne. He was called the Great, but also had the nickname Vert-galant, a literary expression to designate the amorous enterprise that characterized Henry, despite the advanced age in which he conquered the throne. He died assassinated by a lone attacker, François Ravaillac, who stabbed him while he was in a carriage in the center of Paris. During the sixteenth century, France was torn apart by violent religious wars between Catholics and Protestants: religious divisions weakened the French monarchy, threatened by the expansionist will of Catholic Spain. Henry of Bourbon, ascended the throne with the name of Henry IV, brought peace back to France and above all restored the unity of the country and the prestige of the monarchy. After forty years of wars between Catholics and Protestant Huguenots, the kingdom of France finally found peace with him.
