The precious pair of paintings executed on glass are presented inside finely carved and gilded wooden mirrors dating back to the mid-18th century and made in Piedmont.
The two paintings depict the biblical subjects Saint Paul Nourished by the Raven and the Baptism of Christ, respectively. The difficulty of painting on glass is given by the different smoothness of the brush on the smooth glass surface, compared to the canvas, and by the execution which must be carried out specularly and from the reverse. The painting is therefore protected by the glass itself, which is inserted inside the frame.
Stylistically, the painter, who demonstrates a casual artistic skill, is to be found among the artists active in the Piedmont area in the 18th century, who likely drew inspiration from engravings for the study of the two compositions. Artistic historical studies are currently underway.
The works are particularly decorative and pleasant, both for the brightness of the gilded frame and for the saturated and lively chromatic palette used by the painter.
In a good state of conservation, it should be noted that the glass of the work depicting Saint Paul has been enlarged to adapt to the profile of the frame and then completed pictorially at a later time.
