This particular and graceful pair of sculptures was made in France in the 18th century. It consists of two figures, one male and one female, made of gilded bronze, placed on bases in white marble sculpted to simulate a rock. The marble rests in turn on a shaped gray marble base, connected to the sculpture with a fine gilded bronze frame.
The male figure has evident oriental physiognomic features, with long mustaches and almond-shaped eyes, and from the headdress he wears, it can be assumed that he is a Chinese character. The woman has her hair gathered in an oriental hairstyle and both wear 18th-century clothes with a long buttoned tunic and wide sleeves. They sit on one side, with one leg bent and the other stretched out, comfortably leaning against a rock. They show a colloquial attitude that puts them in relation and specular to each other.
These sculptures are of contained dimensions, perfect for enhancing and decorating a piece of furniture such as a chest of drawers, a console, a fireplace, a desk or, placed in a bookcase, as bookends.
