The beautiful painting proposed, depicting a love scene between Venus and Adonis, is attributed to an author active in Rome in the mid-seventeenth century, trained in the stylistic and compositional examples of the Roman Filippo Lauri (Rome, 1623 – 1694).
This type of mythological representation was very successful, especially in Rome in the first part of the seventeenth century: initially with Poussin, as the main exponent in the direct wake of Titian, then continuing with authoritative masters such as Lorrain, Spierinck and Lauri himself, artists who contributed to developing this theme in a fascinating convergence of artistic ideas.
Lauri, in particular, to whose renowned workshop we can easily associate the painting in question, was the author of exquisite compositions with mythological and Arcadian subjects, made with grace and rapid pictorialism, so much so as to obtain extraordinary success for the demanding aristocracy of the capital.
In particular, in the proposed painting, we see a depiction of the love idyll between the most beautiful of the goddesses, Venus, and the young mortal Adonis, an episode taken from classical sources and in particular from the Latin poet Ovid (Metamorphoses X, 525-559), with the two lovers immortalized in a moment of tenderness.
Desperately in love with her beloved, thanks to the help of an arrow shot by Cupid, the goddess would have decided to follow the beautiful hunter everywhere in his hunting activity, no longer paying attention to her usual occupations.
Here we see them surrounded by numerous playful cherubs, who represent amorous passion and therefore life, and by her handmaidens, the Three Graces, intent on refreshing themselves in the body of water. Other cherubs animate the scene, one playfully guiding the goddess's chariot pulled by doves, another entertaining himself with Adonis's two greyhounds, and a third embracing a swan.
