The full moon illuminates the wake of the sailing ship in the foreground as it heads out to sea, observed by figures on the beach. Two other sailing ships with crew, some distant architecture, and a fortress overlook the Gulf and are touched by clouds illuminated by the moonlight. A barely perceptible small sailing ship in the distant night haze completes a work with a truly captivating atmosphere. Includes a gilded, painted, tortoise-shell, and ebonized period frame.
