Charming oil on canvas painting characterized by remarkable pictorial quality, depicting a young man with braids of garlic and red onions, and a wineskin on his shoulder. The young man is represented with humble clothes, a large headgear to cover his eyes from the sun, and a proud smile.
A very interesting particularity and a symptom of a cultured artist or client could be a very unusual detail, which serves as an attribute to the young farmer: the presence of an animal bladder used in the Italian countryside as thermal insulation and food container. The presence of this element, with the leakage of liquid, right from the mouth of the bladder, could have meanings alluding to sexuality or the transience of life. More than a portrait, this would seem in all respects a genre scene, from which we can capture the thematic and stylistic influences with the painting of Giovanni Francesco Cipper (Feldkirch, July 15, 1664 – Milan, October 17, 1736) and probably it is a valuable contemporary follower, or an anonymous devotional painter of worthy quality, not easily recognizable in genre scenes.
Chromatic contrasts and strong luminosity lead us to refer this painting to an industrious pictorial school between Emilia and Lombardy, probably active in the city of Cremona in the first half of the 18th century.
