Workshop of Francesco Trevisani (1656 - 1746)
Oil on canvas
Original frame
Canvas dimensions 63 x 49 cm, frame 76 x 62 cm
In one of the rooms of the new south wing of the National Gallery of Palazzo Barberini in Rome (No. 37, dedicated to painting in the Capital between 1670-1750), are exhibited four canvases by the painter Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746) depicting as many continents: Europe, Africa, Asia, and America.
These are preparatory studies, practically oil sketches on canvas, measuring 74 x 57.5 cm, executed in 1709 commissioned by Pope Clement XI Albani (1649-1721) for the mosaic decoration project on the spandrels of the Baptistery chapel in St. Peter's.
The Four Parts of the World are depicted with as many female figures, surrounded by identifying attributes of distinctive, natural, and cultural traits.
This canvas, practically identical in appearance, color, and size, is a variation of America very similar to the final solution and is part of the preparatory works created in the Master's workshop.
The painting, originating from an important Roman family, constitutes an interesting historical as well as artistic document.
The canvas is in excellent condition and is complete with its original frame, entirely identical to those exhibited at Palazzo Barberini.
