Champlevé decorated inkwell, late 19th century.  Translated
Description:
Inkwell with champlevé decoration, late 19th century. Champlevé is an ancient enameling technique in which cells or cavities are carved into the surface of a metal object and filled with vitreous enamel. The piece is then fired until the enamel melts, and once cooled, it is smoothed and polished. The uncarved parts of the original surface remain visible as the outline of the enameled designs. The inkwell has a lid with a small palm leaf-shaped knob and an internal glass for the ink.
