"The sign, the soul"
"The drawings that Matisse made in the mid-1930s were those that the artist considered his greatest successes. These drawings represent women lying on backgrounds adorned with arabesque fabrics and are miracles of precise lines that best encompass the sphere of sensuality. In the representation of mirrors and reflections, the master seems to enclose the very soul of his models in fine and virtuous features." Henri Matisse, in agreement with the publisher Zervos, granted the right to reproduce these lithographic sketches in a maximum of 499 copies.
