Gaspare Lopez (Naples 1677 - Florence 1732)
"Still life with vases of flowers and majolica"
Oil on canvas
Canvas dimensions: 58 x 44 cm, Frame dimensions: 73 x 60 cm
Excellent state of preservation, cleaned and relined.
Beautiful antique gilded frame
Attributable to the Neapolitan School, the still life in question shows all the stylistic and compositional similarities of the works of Gaspare Lopez, a protagonist of 18th-century Neapolitan painting in the wake of Andrea Belvedere and the French flower painters.
The work documents very well the remarkable expressive skills of the painter, who is able to create a sequence of similar compositions without falling into the banality of illustrative repetition, showing a descriptive sensitivity of remarkable visual impact. For comparison, one can cite the Still Life of Flowers published by Alberto Cottino (cfr. Cottino, 2010, p.16, fig. 16).
It is a painting of the finest quality with all the characteristics of the most beautiful antique still lifes, enriched by the luminous images of white and blue majolica displayed among the three redundant floral compositions.
