Circle of Francesco di Simone Ferrucci (1437-1493)
Virgin Enthroned with Child between Saint Peter and Saint Paul
Molded terracotta tile in bas-relief
54 x 44 cm
As in the marble tile of the Cathedral of Arezzo made by Francesco di Simone Ferrucci, here our sculptor uses the stylistic device of the trilobate niche to frame the characters. In this case, a Virgin seated with the Child on whom the dove of the Holy Spirit descends, surrounded by angels. The architectural tympanum that surmounts it is supported by fluted Corinthian columns. On the sides stand watchful Saint Peter and Saint Paul with the usual attributes of the keys and the sword. The strong classicism of late antique taste, which pervades this relief, suggests a deep knowledge of Roman antiquities, and its consequent possible Capitoline origin, going to search among those sculptors active in the papal sphere around the end of the 15th century.
