Son of a shopkeeper and brother of the writer Georges Darien (1862-1921), Henri Gaston Darien was born in Paris on January 8, 1864, and died in Paris on January 7, 1926.
A student of J.Lefebvre and Antoine Guillemet, Darien debuted at the "Salon des Artistes Français" in 1886 and participated regularly in the prestigious event until 1914.
The artist also exhibited at the "Salon de l'Union Artistique" in Toulouse from 1888 to 1908, at the Salon of Mulhouse, the Salon of Honfleur, the Salon of Epinal, the Salon of Besançon, the Salon of Nancy, at the "Exposition Régionale" of Remiremont,...

The artist often depicted views of Paris in winter, while during the summer season he moved to Bénouville, in Normandy, where he painted seascapes.
Darien obtained an Honorable Mention in 1889, a Third Class Medal in 1897, Raigecourt - Goyon Prize 1897, a Second Class Medal in 1899 and a bronze medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900.
In 1910, he was appointed "Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur".
Description:
The painting described here depicts a suggestive view of Paris at dusk. The painting dates back to 1891, a period during which Darien presented three paintings with similar subjects at the "Salon des Artistes Français":
"Après la pluie, quai Malaquais à Paris" (1888), "Crépuscule, quai Malaquais à Paris" (1889), "Le quai du Louvre à Paris" (1890).
This one in particular could correspond to the painting entitled "Au crépuscule, quai du Louvre" presented at the Universal Exposition of Paris in 1900.
