This gallant scene depicts a boy and a girl playing musical instruments while looking at each other. The work is signed Riccardo Pellegrini, dated 1899. The painter, trained in the Milan of Romanticism, studied in Rome and Naples, followed by Domenico Morelli; he traveled extensively through the nations of Europe, including England, France, and Spain, the latter being an important source of inspiration for the rustic Spanish subjects of many of his paintings. In Pisa, an exhibition with 19 canvases was dedicated to him. The trip to Spain also inspired him in his activity as an illustrator, which saw him create drawings for the major magazines of the time. Also in Spain, he illustrated Cervantes' Don Quixote and Alain-René Lesage's Gil Blas. He then created many subjects for postcards which are now collectible.
