A magnificent view of Piazza San Marco, considered the most famous and spectacular of all monumental squares, renowned worldwide for its beauty and architectural integrity. It is also known as "The Living Room of Europe," as Napoleon Bonaparte, enamored with Venice and fascinated by its unique urban layout, called it, well represented by this enchanting place, which stands as the most emblematic image of the City.
The painting, of excellent pictorial quality, impeccably expresses the prerogatives of the Venetian spirit with its typical characters animating the square in characteristic costumes, perfectly described in this splendid canvas.
We are in the heart of the 18th century, the most lavish period of the Republic of Venice, and among the great Masters of Venetian painting of the golden century, the name of Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (Venice, 1697 – 1768), stands out. Among his famous views of the city, Piazza San Marco is certainly one of the favorite subjects of the great Master and his illustrious workshop.
The Author of this fantastic view, to be placed in the second half of the 18th century, is part of the restricted circle of his most valid followers and collaborators, demonstrating an exceptional artistic vein both in the representation of the monuments and in the description of the numerous and varied characters. The perfection in the rendering of all the architectural details of the square is truly remarkable, highlighted by a spectacular play of light and shadow which, together with an accentuated perspective, offers the canvas the sensation of three-dimensionality.
Furthermore, the splendid chromatic range of the scene should be emphasized, which differs from similar works due to a rich variety of warm and cold colors, well combined and remaining unaltered over time, still showing remarkable vivacity.
The conditions of the work are excellent.
The lacquered and gilded frame is typical of the 18th century Venetian style and is the original one of the canvas.
Painting of high level and rare beauty
